Photographers

Photographer website design

For a photographer, the website is the product. Slow galleries or badly compressed images make good work look amateur, and a client who can’t find your packages or how to book moves on to the next name.

UK-wide Fast galleries and portfolios Site from £129

The brief

What a photography website has to do

The mistake I see most often is every shoot in one long gallery, with no prices and a contact form that asks nothing useful. Clients have to work too hard to find work like theirs, and too hard to book.

Galleries that load fast

Your images are the product, but full-size files straight off the camera make a page crawl on a phone. Every image is resized and compressed so it looks sharp and still loads quickly.

A portfolio for each type of work

A couple planning a wedding and a marketing manager booking headshots are looking for different things. Separate portfolios let each of them see only the work that matters to them.

Packages and prices, openly stated

Clients compare photographers on price before they ever get in touch. A clear starting price for each package filters out the wrong enquiries and reassures the right ones.

Enquiry to booking in as few steps as possible

Date, type of shoot, location and budget in one short form, so you can reply with your availability rather than a list of questions.

Reviews where people are deciding

A few words from a past couple or client next to the work they talk about does more than a separate testimonials page nobody clicks.

Name the areas you cover

“Wedding photographer [county]” and “headshots [town]” are the searches that bring bookings. Pages written around where you work are what put you in front of them.

Structure

The pages I'd build you

This suits most wedding, portrait and commercial photographers. The portfolio and packages pages do most of the selling, so they get built properly rather than tacked on.

A home page with a selection of your strongest work, an about page that shows who will be behind the camera, and an enquiry form. Right if most of your bookings already come by word of mouth.

Adds a full portfolio and a packages page. Most clients look at the work and the price before anything else, so these are the two pages that do the most selling.

Weddings, portraits, commercial and family are four different clients with four different questions. A page each lets every client find work that looks like theirs, and gives Google a page to match each search.

Ultimately the choice is yours. These are the pages I would recommend for photographers based on how clients actually choose one, not a fixed menu. Extra pages are £50 each, at build time or later. Privacy policy, terms and the cookie notice are included on every package and do not count towards the page total.

FAQs

Photography website questions

How do you keep galleries fast?

Every image is resized for the screen it is shown on and compressed before it goes up, and images further down the page only load as someone scrolls to them. Your full-size originals stay with you.

Should I put my prices on the site?

Most photographers who publish a starting price get fewer, better enquiries. Weddings and commercial work vary too much for a full price list, so a from-price for each package is usually the honest middle ground.

Can clients book and pay a deposit online?

It can be done, though most photographers prefer to confirm the date personally first. An enquiry form built around date, location and type of shoot gets you most of the way, and online deposits can be added and quoted separately.

Can you host client galleries for proofing?

Proofing and downloads are usually better handled by a dedicated client gallery service, and you may already use one. I will link it properly from your site rather than rebuild it.

How many photos should each portfolio have?

Fewer than you might think. Twenty or thirty of your strongest images for each type of work says more than two hundred. I will help you choose, but the final edit is yours.

Will my images be protected?

Nothing on the web can be fully protected, and right-click blockers mostly annoy genuine clients. Images go up at screen size rather than print size, so anything taken is of limited use.

Do you know anything about photography?

Not as a photographer, and I am not going to claim otherwise. What I do know is how clients search for one and what makes them get in touch. You bring the eye and the work; expect a lot of questions from me.

How quickly can it be live?

Around a fortnight for five pages and three to four weeks for seven, counting from when your chosen images and package details land with me. Whatever we agree goes into the quote as a date, not an estimate.

Next step

What do you want to be booked for?

Weddings, portraits, commercial or family work — each one points the site somewhere different. Tell me which and I will tell you what I would build.
